Russian missile strike kills one in east Ukraine

A 60-year-old woman was killed and several others injured when a Russian missile hit a market in the eastern Ukrainian town of Shevchenkove on Monday, Ukrainian officials said.

Footage posted by social media user Suspilne on the Telegram messaging app showed rescuers searching through rubble, burning rubble and a large crater in what he said was Shevchenkove, southeast of the regional capital Kharkiv . Oleh Synehubov, governor of Kharkiv region, wrote on Telegram that “unfortunately a 60-year-old woman has died”.

“All the other victims are in hospital. Doctors help them. Rescuers are continuing to clear the debris,” he said. He previously said that at least seven people were injured, including a 13-year-old girl.

Andriy Yermak, the head of the presidential administration, also said that one person was killed and posted a photo of the burning market on Telegram. Criticizing Russia for the attack, he wrote: “Ordinary terrorists”.

Reuters could not immediately verify the news and images of the attack.

Suspilne quoted a city official as saying that at least three houses were damaged in the attack and a shop was damaged, but Monday was not a market day. Russia, which invaded Ukraine more than 10 months ago, did not immediately comment on the reported attack.
